Donegal Golf Club - Murvagh Links

Donegal Golf Club at Murvagh is an outstanding links masterpiece of a golf course. Designed by the legendary course architect, Eddie Hackett, it is continually featured in Golf World's Top 100 courses in Ireland and Great Britain.

Donegal Golf Club was founded in 1959 and the first golf course and clubhouse was built on the edge of Donegal Town at Tullycullion. In the early 70’s some far-sighted members identified the links land of the Murvagh Peninsula as being more than suitable for a golf course.

The course and new clubhouse was officially opened in 1976. Since then the course has undergone some changes with major remodelling at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 12th, 13th and 14th. Most of these changes were carried out under the direction of Mr Pat Ruddy.

In 1997 the original clubhouse was demolished and the current structure was officially opened in May 1998. The club and course has in the past hosted the Irish Ladies Close Championship in 1979 and again in 2003. More recently in 2004 the Men’s Irish Close Championship was held here, won by the European Amateur Champion, Brian McElhinney.

The clubhouse sitting out on the peninsula through a wooded drive ticks all the boxes and has all the facilities needed including a bar where you can get a great meal, Pro Shop and locker & shower facilities for Ladies & Gents.

One can be lead into a false sense of security on the first few holes at Murvagh as they are rather gentle. This abruptly ends at the 5th when you are faced with the ‘Valley of Tears’. It is wedged into the dunes and begins a sensational stretch of holes.

From the 6th you overlook the beach to Benbulbin, Killybegs and in the distance are the wonderful Blue Stack Mountains. This is a scene to relish, as the serious stuff starts now. The course becomes like a raging storm from this point where greens are out of sight and club selection needs to be well thought out. A sigh of relief can be had from the 12th as you move away from the bay. Big hitters will then enjoy the wider fairways which are more forgiving. This is a fantastic course that is well worth the visit.
